If you've been tuning cars for more than a week, you’ve probably already heard about Alientech’s Kess lineup. And if you’ve been doing this for a while, there’s a solid chance you’ve already used Kess V2 at some point. It’s been one of the most reliable go-to tools for years. But now, with Kess V3 out and Kess 3 making some waves too, it’s fair to be a bit confused.

So what’s actually changed? Is it just a new name, or is there more going on? And most importantly; if you're planning to invest or upgrade, which version should you go for in 2025?

This post is all about helping you figure that out. We’ll break down the differences, what each one actually does, what’s worth keeping, what’s outdated, and what’s genuinely useful moving forward.

Let’s not waste time.

First, Who's Alientech and What’s Kess All About?

If you're brand new to tuning, Alientech is one of the big names in the tuning tool game. They've been around for ages, and their tools are used all over the world by both beginners and high-end shops.

The Kess series is their main lineup for ECU reading/writing; mostly over OBD, but now with more flexibility (Bench and Boot in the newer versions). It’s known for reliability, wide vehicle coverage, and simple workflow.

Now, depending on what version you’re looking at, what Kess does; and how it does it; varies a lot.

Kess V2: The Old Reliable (But Getting Old Now)

Let’s start with Kess V2, the OG tool that really got Alientech on the map for a lot of people. If you’re just doing simple OBD reads and writes on older cars, Kess V2 still works just fine. But let’s be real here; it's showing its age.

What It Does Well:

  1. Great support for older ECUs (EDC16, MED9, etc.)
  2. Easy-to-use interface, minimal setup
  3. Worked well with Alientech’s protocols and checksums
  4. Still used widely in workshops for safe OBD tunes

Where It’s Falling Behind:

  1. No Bench or Boot support; OBD only
  2. Limited support for newer ECUs (MD1, MG1, SID321, etc.)
  3. No regular updates anymore
  4. Getting harder to find protocol support for newer cars

If you’ve already got it and you’re only working on older diesels or basic stuff from the early 2010s, cool; keep using it. But if you're starting out now or looking to expand your work, Kess V2 is more or less end-of-life.

Kess V3: The One That Never Fully Landed

Now, Kess V3... okay, this is a weird one. It was introduced sort of quietly as the next-gen tool to replace V2, but it never really took off like people expected. To be honest, a lot of tuners skipped over it entirely because it didn’t offer much of a leap forward.

What It Brought to the Table:

  1. Updated hardware (faster, more stable)
  2. More potential for Bench and Boot modes (in theory)
  3. Better interface and slightly improved security
  4. Some improved support for newer ECUs

But Also:

  1. Didn’t fully support Bench and Boot for a long time
  2. Protocol rollout was slow and inconsistent
  3. Licensing and activation stuff was a bit messy
  4. Not a big enough improvement over V2 to justify the cost

So yeah, it was kind of a half-step. If you bought it, cool; it’s still a decent tool. But if you skipped it, you didn’t really miss much.

Kess 3: The Real Successor to the Throne

Now, Kess 3; this is where Alientech finally nailed it. It’s a full reboot of the system, not just a new name. The tool is built for 2025 and beyond. It’s faster, way more versatile, and actually ready to handle modern tuning demands.

What Makes Kess 3 Different?

  1. Combines OBD, Bench, and Boot into one tool (no more separate devices)
  2. Supports both ECU and TCU (transmission) tuning
  3. Modular license system (buy what you need, skip what you don’t)
  4. Much faster data transfer speeds
  5. Online dashboard with updates, backups, and file management
  6. Built-in security bypasses for some newer ECUs

This is the tool that finally makes Bench and Boot tuning simple under the Alientech umbrella. No need to mess around with extra tools for opening ECUs or complex pinouts; they’ve finally integrated everything under one hood.

It’s Also a Bit of an Investment

Let’s not sugarcoat it. Kess 3 isn’t cheap. The base unit isn’t crazy expensive, but once you start adding licenses (car OBD, car Boot, TCU tuning, etc.), the cost adds up. Still, compared to buying separate tools for each function, it makes sense in the long run.

Plus, updates and support are actually rolling out frequently. That was one of the biggest frustrations with V2 and V3; slow or dead updates. Kess 3 is active and seems to be Alientech’s full focus now.

Kess 3: Real-World Use

From the tuners I know who’ve made the switch, most are pretty happy.

  1. Bench work on MD1/MG1 ECUs? Smooth.
  2. Boot access on blocked ECUs? Works reliably with guides in the software.
  3. Transmission tuning? No need for K-TAG anymore.
  4. And best of all; you can actually move fast. Reads and writes are much quicker.

A lot of the frustration that came with slow reads or inconsistent connection issues with older tools are mostly gone.

Still, it’s not perfect. Some ECUs are still missing from the list, and you might occasionally hit a snag where a read fails or a connection is finicky. But those issues are normal for any tuning tool. What matters is that Kess 3 is actively being updated.

What About K-TAG?

If you’re coming from V2 or V3, you might be wondering, “What about K-TAG?”

Here’s the thing: Kess 3 replaces both Kess and K-TAG. So now, instead of having one tool for OBD (Kess) and one for Boot (K-TAG), you get it all in one box.

That’s a big deal for workflow. Less clutter, fewer cables, fewer activation headaches.

How Licensing Works Now (And What to Watch Out For)

Licensing with Alientech tools has always been… interesting. Sometimes frustrating. But with Kess 3, it’s a bit more transparent now. You buy the base unit, then choose licenses:

  1. Car OBD
  2. Car Bench/Boot
  3. Bike OBD
  4. TCU protocols
  5. And so on…

You can stack licenses as your business grows. Don’t need bike tuning? Don’t buy that. Only want to tune TCUs? Cool, grab that license. It’s flexible, but yeah; it gets expensive fast.

Just make sure you read what’s included with each license before buying. Sometimes what you think you’re getting isn’t exactly what’s in the package. Always check the supported vehicles and ECUs first.

So... Which One Should You Pick?

Here’s the straight-up, no-fluff answer:

Still Have Kess V2?

If it’s working and you’re only doing older OBD jobs, keep using it. No need to fix what’s not broken. But don’t expect support or new protocols. It’s like tuning a car on Windows XP; it still boots up, but it’s not really where things are headed.

Bought Kess V3?

It’s okay. Use it for what it supports. But if you’re thinking of going deeper into Boot or Bench work, or want newer ECU coverage, upgrading to Kess 3 might save you some pain in the long run.

Starting Fresh or Ready to Go Big?

Kess 3, hands down. It’s the only one in the lineup that’s still being actively developed, getting real updates, and covering both modern and older ECUs. You’ll pay more upfront, but it’s the only one that’s really ready for 2025 and beyond.
